Why Jo Jo Mind & Body Ltd   Aims

"Jo Jo Mind and Body is inspired by the highly successful Josephine Project: an interactive sexual health education resource for women with learning disabilities. Them Wifies is a community arts organisation based in Newcastle upon Tyne which uses the arts as tools for change. Josephine evolved as an innovative project over several years due to the vision and expertise of Them Wifies and their arts workers with the Wrong Audrey Project another of Them Wifies poject that worked with women with learning disabilities themselves and who were at the heart of developing Josephine. "

Jo Jo Mind & Body is a social enterprise which will deliver a unique service for mainly people with a learning disability.

In a workshop setting they will learn every aspect of relationships. "Joe & Joanne" are life sized interactive puppets made of cloth whose tummies open to expose their internal organs. Joanne has detachable breasts one housing a lump and Joe has detachable testicles again one housing a lump to teach self examination. They both have places in their heads and hearts where they keep their most inner thoughts and feelings. This is a new and exciting way of delivering accessible sex education, health issues and sexuality training to people with learning disabilities and also working as a consultancy project to other organisations. This will be achieved and delivered in workshop settings leaving all inhibitions at the door and using stories, drama and puppetry.

Like most people, adults with a learning disability long to be in a relationship, research and experience show that most people with a learning disability face many barriers to leading a fulfilled life or a supported relationship. Cultural barriers have prevented people from learning about relationships and through prejudice and a misguided notion of, 'keeping people safe' and a lack of opportunity to meet and make relationships.
The lack of accessible sex education has been identified as a barrier. "Joe & Joanne" is proven to be an accessible and effective method of learning about sensitive issues for people with a learning disability whilst championing and challenging people's rights to love and happiness.

It is also widely accepted that knowledge and understanding is the best method of keeping vulnerable people safe. The project will provide individual and bespoke programmes of interactive (user led) workshops using hand crafted, life sized interactive male and female puppets specialist arts facilitators and workshop packs.

"Jo Jo Mind & Body Ltd" promises to provide a professional service at all times while delivering sex education to people with learning disabilities, their parents, support workers and service providers, all of whom can expect the best possible service "Jo Jo Mind & Body" has to offer, and to be treated with the utmost respect and privacy, but more importantly valuing the person and their wishes, "Jo Jo" believe every person has the right to live their life as they see fit, and in our role we will strive to help them achieve this aim.

Through educational empowerment we will dispel the myths that generations before us have had of people with learning disability surrounding sex and sexuality and encourage them to discuss difficult subjects that up until now have been brushed aside.

    Objectives

The uniqueness of "Joe & Joanne" is that it is accessible, safe and effective. It can be delivered to adults with a learning disability in a way which is fun, interactive, innovative, and will encourage participation and interaction on various levels making the whole experience accessible to everyone including people who don’t use words to communicate. At the same time this method has proven to be equally as effective at communicating strong messages and key learning points to workers and organisations, which support people with a learning disability.

"Joe & Joanne" are tangible characters in a room with carefully researched; adaptable stories that people really can relate to and understand. Drama and story telling are universally a popular method of communication and learning that people find easier to remember because it is experiential. The safe environment that this project creates as part of the integral approach is the key to people gaining confidence.

Through forum theatre and young enthusiastic actors delivering all workshops, our main objective will be to break down barriers and allow people to open up to our method of teaching no matter what level of learning they are at
