"Jo Jo Mind and Body is inspired by the highly successful Josephine Project: an interactive sexual health education resource for women with learning disabilities. Them Wifies is a community arts organisation based in Newcastle upon Tyne which uses the arts as tools for change. Josephine evolved as an innovative project over several years due to the vision and expertise of Them Wifies and their arts workers with the Wrong Audrey Project another of Them Wifies poject that worked with women with learning disabilities themselves and who were at the heart of developing Josephine. "
Jo Jo Mind & Body is a social enterprise which will deliver a unique service for mainly people with a learning disability.
In a workshop setting they will learn every aspect of relationships. "Joe & Joanne" are life sized interactive puppets made of cloth whose tummies open to expose their internal organs. Joanne has detachable breasts one housing a lump and Joe has detachable testicles again one housing a lump to teach self examination. They both have places in their heads and hearts where they keep their most inner thoughts and feelings. This is a new and exciting way of delivering accessible sex education, health issues and sexuality training to people with learning disabilities and also working as a consultancy project to other organisations. This will be achieved and delivered in workshop settings leaving all inhibitions at the door and using stories, drama and puppetry.
Like most people, adults with a learning disability long to be in a relationship, research and experience show that most people with a learning disability face many barriers to leading a fulfilled life or a supported relationship. Cultural barriers have prevented people from learning about relationships and through prejudice and a misguided notion of, 'keeping people safe' and a lack of opportunity to meet and make relationships.
The lack of accessible sex education has been identified as a barrier. "Joe & Joanne" is proven to be an accessible and effective method of learning about sensitive issues for people with a learning disability whilst championing and challenging people's rights to love and happiness.
It is also widely accepted that knowledge and understanding is the best method of keeping vulnerable people safe. The project will provide individual and bespoke programmes of interactive (user led) workshops using hand crafted, life sized interactive male and female puppets specialist arts facilitators and workshop packs.
